New Tyra II West facilities set sail towards the North Sea

Today at 9:48 AM (local time), the Tyra Redevelopment team in Singapore celebrated “mission accomplished” when they sent the three brand-new wellhead and riser platforms with a total weight of 3,485 tons and two bridges on their journey towards the Tyra field where they will be installed later this year. With this sail-away milestone achieved the fabrication activities at the Sembcorp Marine (SMOP) yard in Singapore are concluded.

After a festive sail-away ceremony this morning, the Tyra team waved the newly built facilities a last goodbye and untied the mooring lines of transport ship BigRoll Beaufort which will now embark on a 15.500-kilometers-long voyage towards the North Sea.

This journey is however far from unknown for BigRoll Beaufort that just recently changed its look from red to blue, because the ship already safely transported the first three out of six production topsides from Singapore to their end-destination at the Tyra field during summer last year.

The new facilities departed from the SMOP yard today will fill the gap left since the ageing Tyra West facilities in the North Sea have been removed during 2020.

Second Tyra fabrication yard concludes activities

With today’s sail-away the fabrication yard in Singapore will now be the second one to conclude their activities following the yard in Spain from which the new platform legs were delivered to the Tyra field in 2020.

Reaching this milestone also means that many employees from TotalEnergies will say goodbye to their close colleagues from Sembcorp Marine who helped to construct the six production topsides and four bridges since January 2020.

While activities in Singapore end the Tyra Redevelopment journey continues. Fabrication is still underway at the yards in Batam and Italy where the new processing topside and the new accommodation topside are taking shape.

Facilities make a pit stop

Heavy transport vessel BigRoll and the Tyra II West facilities are now making their way towards the North Sea. But before heading to the Tyra field later this year for installation, they will make a pit stop in the Netherlands where they will be temporarily stored.

The weather is quite rough in the North Sea during wintertime, and therefore the optimal time for installation starts from April. Due to this, the Tyra West facilities will be temporarily stored onboard the world’s largest crane vessel Sleipnir in Rotterdam until she departs for the installation campaign.

FACTS ON THE TYRA REDEVELOPMENT

Tyra started production in 1984 but was temporarily shut-in in 2019, and installation at the Tyra field are being redeveloped and modernized. Tyra II will be the new high-tech hub for Danish natural gas and reduce CO2 emissions by 30%.

When production of Tyra II resumes in June 2023, a continued production of natural gas is secured for at least 25 years. Thus, Tyra II becomes a central part of the Danish energy infrastructure by offering more affordable, clean, and reliable energy, which both Denmark and Europe needs in the transition towards a low-emission society.

  • TotalEnergies is the operator of the Tyra field on behalf of DUC – a partnership between TotalEnergies (43.2%), Noreco (36.8%), and Nordsøfonden (20%).
  • The DUC partners invest a total of DKK 21 billion in redeveloping the Tyra field, which makes it the largest Danish oil and gas investment ever.
  • Tyra is Denmark’s largest natural gas field and a center for processing and exporting more than 90% of the natural gas produced in the Danish North Sea.
  • Production and export from the field were temporarily closed in September 2019, and the field will reopen in June 2023. It is expected that Tyra will reach a peak production corresponding to 60,000 barrels per day.
  • A redevelopment of the Tyra field is necessary due to the field’s natural subsidence of the chalk reservoir after many years of production. The platforms have sunk approximately 5 meters over the past 30 years, which has reduced the distance between the sea and the topsides.
  • The redevelopment of the Tyra field includes three main elements: decommissioning as well as recycling and disposal of the old Tyra platforms; recycling and extending the current platform legs on six of the platforms with 13 meters, which will have new topsides; a completely new process platform and a completely new accommodation platform.
  • More than 70 local companies in the offshore sector in and around Esbjerg contribute to the Tyra II project.
