Tyra has established full technical capacity

Esbjerg, 11 November 2024 – Ahead of the winter season, TotalEnergies EP Danmark, on behalf of the Danish Underground Consortium, is pleased to announce that all necessary machinery is now fully operational at the new Tyra facilities. This milestone marks the achievement of full technical capacity, enabling the gradual ramp-up to production plateau before year-end.

Since first gas was exported from the new Tyra facilities to Denmark in March 2024, unexpected issues with two transformers delivering power to key gas compressors delayed the ramp-up.

I'm very pleased that the new Tyra facilities have now achieved full technical capacity. Thanks to the diligent efforts of everyone involved, we have resolved the challenges and implemented the necessary repair measures ahead of the winter season,

says Ole Hansen, Managing Director at TotalEnergies EP Denmark.

In the coming time, the focus will be on establishing the gas flow from the Tyra field and the surrounding satellites to achieve full production of the hub.

Our priority remains to safely complete Tyra’s ramp-up to the production plateau, making Denmark again a net exporter of gas. With an expected production of 2.8 billion cubic meters per year, Tyra will play an important role in ensuring energy security and independence for Denmark and Europe,

says Ole Hansen.

Denmark is a leader in green energy development, yet nearly 50% of the country’s energy consumption still comes from oil and gas. At a European level, the dependence is even higher and the gas imports from Russia continue to be substantial. Once at a production plateau, Tyra is expected to represent approximately 6% of EU natural gas production.

Facts on the Tyra Redevelopment

  • TotalEnergies is the operator of the Tyra field on behalf of DUC – a partnership between TotalEnergies (43.2%), BlueNord (36.8%) and Nordsøfonden (20%).
  • Tyra is Denmark’s largest natural gas field and has been a center for processing and exporting more than 90% of the natural gas produced in the Danish North Sea before its redevelopment. This was necessary due to the field’s natural subsidence of the chalk reservoir after many years of production.
  • The redevelopment of the Tyra field included three main elements: decommissioning and recycling of the old Tyra platforms; recycling and extending the current platform legs on six of the platforms with 13 meters, which will have new topsides; a completely new process module and a new accommodation platform.
  • As one of the world’s most advanced natural gas facilities, Tyra II will secure continued production of natural gas with 30% less CO2 emissions compared to the former facilities and contribute to energy security and independence in Denmark and Europe through the export pipelines to Nybro and Den Helder.
